Illnath – 4 Shades Of Me

Illnath was formed in 1999 and at this point only one original member is left in the band, the man behind the music: Peter "Pete" Falk. The rest of the band consist of Kenneth (bass), Mona (vocals) and Dennis (drums). Illnath is a band that has evolved explosively through the years and is often referred to as symphonic black metal. The new style will be more extreme in all directions with no keyboards, and the black element will be a bit more in the background musically and also regarding image.

Years ago the band played symphonic black metal, and the one last remaining member for this era is guitarist Pete. Their style has changed massively, there aren't a lot of black metal influences remaining. The first track 'Blood Warrior' starts really heavy (metal). Reminds a little into Arch Enemy direction, but sounds absolute independent. The female growls and shouts/screams are pretty fine, and fit perfect to the heavy style. Nice guitar lines, absolute tight drumming and interesting songwriting. The sound is perfect for this music. The female screams protrude at its best when they come in two voices. The album offers a great variety and influences of a lot of genres. 'Gallow Hill' sounds really oldschool and groovy, 'King Of Your Mind' goes more into Gothenburg Death direction, 'Captain Of The Seven Seas' starts with a nice clear bass intro, followed by nice blastings... This variety makes the album very interesting.

Illnath are able to create their own style, and make every song sound independent. 'Angelic Voices Calling' is a re-recorded track from 2001, more into the old style, but matches absolutely to the newer ones. This album is an positive surprise, and the new style evolved in a great direction. Good stuff, horns up!
