Invidiosus - Malignant Universe

Hailing from the great, cold (although it’s rather hot and humid currently) sometimes white north of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Invidiosus have released upon us their debut full length album, "Malignant Universe". Started off in 2007 Invidiosus went through what many bands of this style seem to go through, a multitude of personal changes that happened to occur over their seven years, two demos and two eps. So much change in fact (24 members in total actually) that there is only one original member left standing today, vocalist Matthias Joyce. Yet, over all those years they have stayed true to who Invidiosus is, a veritable treasure trove on sub-genre blending death that can tickle just about any bone in the death loving world.

From your somewhat brutal to uber brutal, your ultra technical to pure chaos, your doom tinged and even your down right classic bones will all be tickled from track one, the intro titled Intro, all the way through to the tenth track, a killer cover of Overkill’s 'Deny The Cross' (plus what would be the eleventh track, the fun yet lethal cover of Body Count’s 'Cop Killer' that they released as a bonus just as I was, finally, writing this review.) Yet, do not get me wrong, dear reader, for this is not an album full of bandwagon genre jumping, from track to track or minute to minute even but a true mixture of it all blended together in a very cohesive and ass kicking way.

"Malignant Universe" here is a testament to Invidiosus’ love of, well, just about everything death and this love and their pride in it really show through. For each and every element of this album are of the utmost quality, from the multi faceted vocals to the pummeling drum and from the rumbling, yet intricate bass to the horn thorwing worthy guitars, all quality. High quality at that, these gents really know how to tear shit up and how to do it to the best of their abilities. Now, I was gonna go on about the vocals this and the guitars that but, honestly, this is an experience that commands and deserves respect for each and ever aspect and just calling a few out truly does a disservice to the rest.

On June twentieth of 2013 I posted a rather short review of this band’s killer EP, "A Specious Existence", on my tumblr blog where I stated; “Imagine if would that Hate Eternal and Decrepit Birth had a dirty little love child that fortunately loved classic, NWOBHM, metal, well, that little shit would probably and most likely have to be Invidiosus.” Well, that statement there still pretty much holds true here on, the stellar, "Malignant Universe" yet I feel that they have successfully moved past the influence of their heroes and become a force onto their own. And that force is a truly face melting, inspiring, jaw dropping and absolutely killer unit set to slay.
