Israthoum - Monument Of Brimstone
Raw, extreme, misanthropic black metal from the Netherlands. Israthoum originally hail from Portugal, forming in 1992 as Grendel and experiencing some changes in their namesake until their move to the Netherlands in ‘98. The band released a handful of demos, live recordings and MCDs for a decade following their inception, releasing their MCD Black Scenery Avatar on Merciless Records in 2005, when the band established a steady lineup with guitarist Kald. Their first full length Monument Of Brimstone appeared on Spikefarm four years later. Israthoum’s black metal is cold, bleak and atmospheric, in addition to being dissonant, sharp-edged and bottomless, perfectly in the vein of the Norwegian and Swedish pioneers of the early ‘90s. As Darkthrone, Mayhem and Satyricon did then, Israthoum invoke images of falling through an endless abyss where legions of mysterious and frightening creatures exist. No coincidence that the band coined the catch phrase “Prepare for the deep one-way dive” on their MySpace profile. Taking that leap of faith in the powers of darkness will have the inevitable benefit of being blessed with boundless strength and the will to destroy your enemies. Israthoum’s inclusion of keyboards in “Soul Funeral” and “My Death Grotesque” and their inclusion of melodic vocals in “The Slanderer” bestow additional atmosphere upon this album, making Monument Of Brimstone” an unforgettable experience.
