Living Corpse- Metaphysical Collapse

Living Corpse is a band from Itlay who perform extreme metalcore on their debut Metaphysical Collapse. While the album sounds complex and impressive from the titles of songs like "Zero Is the Zenith..." or "6th Race Of Aquarius...," it's all mostly frills with no real thrills. Much of the music here is raw screaming with everything being performed at breakneck speed with semi melodic riffs. The drums sound on autopilot and after the first few tracks one could name about five bands that sound just like Living Corpse. It's very hard to find something impressive in an album when there's very little that is original.

The album opens up with "Ars Regio" which sounds like a promising track in the way the guitars are distorted, clear, and mid paced. But, then the album jumps into the standard metalcore chug with too much cymbal work, monotonous drum pounding, and vocals that sound like they're being screamed without any real tone or pitch. It's just senseless screaming. A lot of the tracks are like this. Some like "Zero Is The Zenith..." actually make things a little more interesting in the way the riffs open up the song in the sense that they are catchy, and then everything falls apart as it dissolves back to the usual chugging and screaming. "6th Race of Aquarius..." is the best song here because it actually sounds different and clear from all the others. Out of all the tracks for fans to remember from their first listen, this one will probably be it. While it's still uninspiring metalcore thrashings, there's something about the riffs that make the song slightly redeemable. "Daybreak" is a curveball because it isn't even metalcore; it's just a very slow, piano driven outro that doesn't fit the mood of the album at all, but it sounds absolutely beautiful to the ear compared to what was just heard. Perhaps if Living Corpse had sprinkled this throughout their album, possiblying turning their music into more melodic death metal than metalcore, the album might have been a bit more bearable as a whole.

If people don't mind generic metalcore, then this will do fine for them. However, those used to any other genre of metal that actually varies up their style instead of having all their songs sound the same will probably want to pass this up. It's more of an earache than anything, just like the recent Arkea album was, which is the closest comparison that can be made to this album. Screaming and hammering out riffs and drums senselessly doesn't exactly mean it's good music. It may work for people under twenty, but eventually fans realize that they need something a little more complex and filling for their earholes than just generic noise.
