Lost God - Savage Souls
Hailing from Belgium, Lost God offer us their very first sign of life entitled “Savage Souls”. With purchasing this well produced item you get nothing else than Death Metal with occasional Black Metal elements every now and then to enrich the already variable tracks. Every song on this EP contains comprehensible, not too intricate shapes of melodies, as well as stomping riffs and pure Death Metal shredding. So far so good. The drumming ranges from groovy parts to blast beats and leaves no desires unfulfilled, as it is pretty beneficial and contributes enough versatility. If you take a look at Lost Gods line-up, you´ll find a rather known name: former Enthroned member Arnaud Vansteenkiste is handling the drum duties, so it´s no big surprise the rhythm section is very solid and brutal. The before mentioned Black Metal influences allude to the vocals, which aren´t only rooted in the Death / Grind style - sometimes you get hoarse blackened screams, too. So if you´re on the hunt for raw and pure Black Metal-only outfits, Lost God will be the wrong choice. On the other hand, open minded supporters of utter underground Death Metal should give this promising band a try. Unfortunately, big surprises are in short supply, but the atmospheric accoutic part at the end of “Human Fear” is rather unpredictable.
Overall, “Savage Souls” is an interesting but short EP which clocks in with just 12 minutes of total playing time. On the plus side, you have the great dumming, the good sound quality and an ambitious bunch of musicians blasting their way through your auditory canals. The point of criticism is the short playing time. Maybe the guys should have recorded one or two more songs to enhance this release and make it more entertaining. But we´re talking about the bands first effort, which should be seen as an appetizer of things to come in the future. However, Lost God is worth to keep an eye on and I´m sure this act will find lots of new friends within the worldwide underground scene waiting for a full length album. A good start.
