Malevolent Creation - Invidious Dominion
Its gotta be said the last few Malevolent Creation albums have sucked! To this listener anyway, i havent enjoyed a Malevolent Creation record since "Envenomed" but everyone know the real Malevolent Creation lies in the form of "The Ten Commandments" and "Retribution". Two absolutely blinding albums that will forever be etched in our minds as the bands "classic" offerings.
The band has underwent many lineup changes since these classic albums but this album marks an almost return to classic form what with Jason Blachowicz on Bass (since 91) , Brett Hoffman on vocals, the Irreplaceable, Phil Fasciana and new guys, Gio Geraca on guitar and Gus Rios on drums. At this stage of the game, Malevolent Creation need no introductions what with this being their 11th studio album. For those not in the know and this being your first introduction to the band (go look at their back catalouge!!!), MC combine late 80`s early 90`s thrash with a huge death metal element - think of bands like Slayer, Possessed and Dark Angel mixed with perhaps some Suffocation maybe a little bit of early Death.
Originally from Buffalo, New York and moving to Florida when the whole Florida death metal movement was exploding, MC still very much embrace the sound of this period and it must be respected that they have stuck to their guns and not sold out after all these years despite a few turkey albums. This being Hoffman`s 2nd album since returning to the band after "an extended hiatus" shall we say, sounds in fine fine form and is easily recognisable, more so than the "other" guy they had singing for them. He has come into his own at having his own unique instantly recognisable vocal style. The guitars sound
absolutely immense - real heavy and thick but still manage to stay true to that thrash like sound. Gus rios Battery section throughout the album for me is the real highlight as he absolutely beats the living shit out of his kit. The drum production is so heavy it blows my mind! Simply aweosme! The lead guitar work on the album also slays. I knew this already as i had been following the production of the whole album from scratch and i knew then this album was gonna slay! This album clocks in at 36 mins and i have to say, is as close as your going to get to "old school" MC. Its so suffocatingly heavy, it chokesyou to the point where you nearly black out and then slaps you on the face to wake you up again. I have to say i really dig the cover work as it tries to get back to the MC of yesteryore by resurrecting the demon like character on "The Ten Commandments" etched up by none other than legendary cover artist, Par Olofsson.
The whole album flows very well but however builds up climactically like an out of control jauggernaut lorry with the accelerator pedal stuck flat down to the metal. So its at about the mid of the album where it is at its peak! Check out "Compulsive Facebreaker", "Leadspitter" and "Target Rich Environment" and if they dont get your head banging well then there is something seriously wrong with you for all the tracks on offer here are heavy but yet so catchy!
As the album comes to a close, you feel absolutely bludgeoned!! What the hell just happened your asking yourself?! The answer is Malevolent Creation are back on top form with one seriously 1st class brutal album! An Absolute Must Have!
