Mass Extinction - Creations Undoing

Dublin’s Mass Extinction has released a DEMO and has now released an actual EP on Underground Movement. ‘Tis a pleasure to hear an old school thrash band. I don’t listen to much thrash these days. I tend to listen to black metal (Behexen and Burzum) and brutal death (Cattle Decapitation and Disembowled Corpse), but thrash metal is kind to my ears. I do not mean this in any lame way, I mean it to say that I oft times forget the roots of the very genre of music I am listening to right then. I am referring to bands such as Slayer (to whom Mass Extinction owes a great deal of sound-debt) and Sepultura. These are grand bands with epic qualities and I can forget about them too often as I stumble upon the dark paths following around blowing candles, axes glinting in the moon, and wolves howling from somewhere…

The songs are structured along classical metal motifs such as riffs, verse/chorus organization, and consistent rhythms. Sometimes I would say this word “consistent” is a stand in for “monotony,” but not in this case. The classic (read: old school) metal motifs all through CREATIONS UNDOING stand by themselves and do not need to add any other flourishes. Mass Extinction has a grounded metal sound.
