McGalligog - Delusions Of Madness

Irish Melodic Death/Thrashers McGalligog formed in 2006, initial impressions of this debut EP is that it is fresh, brash and exciting, especially the production. Riffs are plentiful and arrangements concise, so is this the next new band trailblazing out of the Emerald Isle? I suppose if there was a different genre on offer, as much as I think this is a great piece of music, especially ‘Another Fast One’, I cannot help comparing them to the early Children of Bodom period, but having said that, there is much more metal in this Irish lot than those Finn’s possess in their big toe nowadays. Notorious P. has a strong rasp to his voice, sometimes a black metal rasp, and the twin guitar attack of Outrageous O. Olly and Surreptitious M. makes life that little bit more pleasant to handle. Of course, you could comment how the hell did they come up with these names! ‘Warlord’ certainly has a Celtic feel with its folk-ridden rhythm, acoustic passages and warmth to the arrangement, something COB lacked and fellow Irish band Primordial has in abundance. Perhaps I am pigeon-holing this talented lot too much, but you certainly have all the required elements of a modern metal release, in fact sometimes retro if you think of the current crop of young bands that appear to be popular, they have not got the one ounce of soul, especially in the guitar melodies towards the end of ‘Warlord’, that you can hear from ‘Delusions of Madness’. Keeping the momentum flowing, the bands namesake track rattles some cages, now by this point, I have to admit, the vocals are kind of getting on my nerves, but overlaying a cool fret rising riff makes it much more bearable and displays more a group effort. ‘Jewel of a Thousand Worlds’ stands out for me, the guitarwork is simply stunning, and if you are not caught nodding your head to the opening notes of ‘Lunacy’ then there must be another planet existing within this mortal coil, here you have more of a traditional metal chug and groove.

If you are looking for a new band to nurture, these Irish lads know a thing or two about making a good release viable, and this EP is available for free download on their website, the riff is king, the melody is god, chug down a beer and let loose with the magic of Ireland.
