Mortal Scepter - As Time Sharpens The Sentence

Hailing from France is the band Mortal Scepter, who’s new EP entitled “As Time Sharpens The Sentence” really stands out, at least in my opinion, as a landmark underground thrash masterpiece, and one of the best as 2015 comes to a close. Why do I say this? Well, the sound that comes from this disc in absolutely and insanely professional from beginning to end and every note and production quality in between. Production wise it has that old school, dirty/grimy feel to it, but as far as the musicianship goes, these guys definitely know how to play their instruments to their utmost ability. I’m dead serious, these guys are absolutely sick!

Riff wise, this EP reminds me a lot of old school Megadeth, Sepultura, Destruction, and even a slight Sodom vibe is happening here even though it is a little bit more polished. Right from the start, in the first track, I can’t help but get the feeling it was inspired a bit from Sepultura’s “Troops Of Doom” with a little bit of Kreator’s “Extreme Aggression” thrown in for good measure. The bass on this EP is of great importance on these tracks. On a lot of albums and EP’s you can’t really tell the bass is there, but on this one it is right there and maybe just a tad bit higher that the guitar riffs which, to me, just adds to the whole old school flavor of this release. Mind you this guy might not be an Alex Webster but there’s no doubt in my mind that he’d be able to hold his own. I love it when the bass is brought to the forefront because it seems that it otherwise gets lost in the mix of things. It may not be the most important component, but it definitely deserves to be heard and felt! The drums are typical but well played for the type of material presented here. Not really innovative but nor does it need to be. It is slightly muffled but still devastating and in your face! Much like you would find in late 80’s and early 90’s thrash. Reminds me a lot of Destruction’s drumming style. The vocals are not really typical of thrash, but are well suited for the music. It sounds like a blend of thrash, death, and black styles. Reminds me of a mixture of Sarcofago, early Sepultura, early Kreator, and Cyclone. As a whole this CD EP is just absolutely sick! You would swear these guys have been around for years with a ton of releases under their belts, but surprisingly, they only have one other release and that is a demo. Also, they’ve only been around since 2012. They have gotten to this point in only 3 years! That just goes to show they have their act together and are serious about their music.

Once again my hat goes off to Unspeakable Axe Records for signing this band and releasing this CD. Now, if Unspeakable Axe releases it you can make a safe bet that it is good quality metal and it will not disappoint even the most sophisticated metal head. So, get in contact with them and get the information on how you can acquire this cd. I highly recommend it if you are into any of the above listed bands or thrash metal in general. Lastly, I am very anxious for a full-length from these guys. If they are this good after only 3 years, 1 demo, and 1 EP, I can only imagine what they could do on a full-length!
