Mortor - Shoot ‘Em Up

This is the second full album release from Canadian death/thrashers Mortor who appear to have a big European influence in their sound from their humble beginnings as a solo project by rhythm guitarist David Paquette. Operation Charlie foxtrot…or ‘Clusterfuck’ is a cool rendition laden with a groove and a vocal delivery I would associate with some One Man Army…sounds, not quite that of The Crown. Energetic is a perfect word to describe the consistent levels that Mortör assist your hearing decline and banging your stereo with sounds of this nature will do wonders for your relationship with your neighbours, but this is only the best way surely!

Presented with artwork penned by artist Daniel Beaudin that depicts a ghoulish cartoon/Dethklok styled military trio of individuals, a pleasant change to the usual metal band album cover and much more purposeful than some sort of abstract weirdness. Of course, this cover work perfectly complements the lyrical content in the tracks. I have already mentioned one of my favourites, but there are a couple more to write home about, like the juggernaut of ‘Eat Lead’ which had a vocal approach similar to death/grind bands somewhere between Decapitated and even the big hitting leaders of death metal. The other track of notable quality is the almost atmospheric growler ‘Days of Our Knives’ that follows a melodeath path with Corpsegrinder styled vocals.

To say there is a great sense of variation within the same sort of presentation is a quality that is very redeeming, whilst being harsh, brutal and soul crushing, ‘Shoot ‘Em Up’ is both technical and melodic (check out the great lead guitar sweeps on ‘Locked and Loaded’) all rolled into one, Mortör are a very promising prospect for fans of this style and should do rather well based on the presentation of ‘Shoot ‘Em Up’.
