Neuroma - 2010 Promo
As you can probably guess from my review of their songs on the "Northern Discomfort" split, Neuroma are batshit insane. An extremely good death metal band with some of the most brutal songwriting around these days, but any band that has songs about how annoying homeless people are and dingoes eating babies are going to be thrown into the loony bin no matter how good they are - so it's good to see that these scouse donut heads are still daft as ever with the new songs here.
The first track 'Dingoes Ate My Baby' is from the aforementioned "Northrn Discomfort" split, so we can negate this for the time being. The real meat of this promo lies in the three new tracks - two new demos of "Columbine Harvester" and "Gash In the Attic" are sure to tickle your funny bone and make you bang your head (as cliche that may sound), and they pose some very intimidating riffing as expected. Since these are demos, the production values are nowhere near the crispness and clarity of the songs on the split but they hold up pretty good for demo tracks and have a nice raw, fuzzy edge to them that makes you feel all warm inside.
Final track is a live version of 'Chicken Poodle Soup' which, as Gregg points out at the start, is a song about eating dog flesh. A true story too, one that I refuse to go into for the time being - all that jazz aside, this is quite a good listen with some great riffing and drumming, and a spectacular performance from bassist Joe Mortimer, though the snare seems a little too loud here. I have to mark this down one notch for some of the production here because it may pain some listerners' ears, but I for one don't mind it that much. I'm cool like that.
This lovely wonder is up for free download on the band's MySpace page and will also be given out at shows this summer, so I'd suggest grabbing this whenever possible. Some slightly iffy production aside (they're demos, it's expected) this is another jolly good output from one of the better death metal bands in the United Kingdom, and they deserve respect. If they don' get it, then they'll fucking take it....
