Only Fumes & Corpses - Selfish Act I

The rather comedic title of the band  not only had me guessing this was a grindcore attempt, but also had me thinking this would be utter shite if I'm going to be perfectly honest. However, upon my first listening of this extremely short album I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this is actually pretty decent. The album clocks in at eleven minutes with a total of thirteen songs...so as you can guess it doesn't really last very long, nor do the songs have any real structure to them, but instead just act as raging amounts of noise. Yet the album is played in some kind of way that actually makes sense in which the music seems enjoyable.

Not to put you off the band at hand, but instead of my guess at grindcore this band actually play a refreshing selection of three genres fused to create something interesting; Hardcore, thrash, and punk. All of these elements are easily heard during the second track in known as 'Blinded', and then pretty much all the way through the rest of the album. The variety may sometimes lack somewhat an actual distinctive purpose, but because the album is so miniature in length...there simply is no need; The album does not bore during it's short cycle. Mostly hectic throughout despite the occasional rocky riffs - the music installs a heavy maniacal feel to each of the songs. Although I'm not certain the word 'songs' is the correct term for what they should be called, but instead short bursts of aggressive noise.

The only major downfall for 'Selfish Act I' is due to the music at times feels as if it exists to serve no real purpose, but instead would appear as a bit of fun whilst the musicians jam together. There's destined to be an audience for the genre, yet I wouldn't understand how people could initially discover bands like Only Fumes & Corpses, but that's just the beauty of it I guess.
