Ontborg - Within The Depths Of Oblivion

From the ashes of Voices Of Decay arises the mighty Ontborg and their crushing debut album "Within The Depths Of Oblivion". Ontborg are a Swedish melodic death metal band with various hints of some obvious black metal love thrown in here and there to truly decimate you. This band of metal veterans, with many a years spent in the melodic death/black Graveworm and/or the already mentioned melodic death/black Voices Of Decay, hail from the town of Merano, Italy. Just about the kind place where you wouldn't expect Swedish melodic death to live and thrive, seeing as it is a place mostly known for it's spas and art nouveau buildings, but apparently you, me and everybody else would be wrong, way, way wrong.

For this group of extremely talented Italians have created one of the greatest examples of a Swedish melodic death metal album released since the proverbial heyday of this specific sub-genre. Within The Depths Of Oblivion grabs your attention from the start and doesn't let you break away, at all, during it's entire fifty minute run time. Which may seem like a long run time length for a death metal album of this ilk but it flies right by before you even know it. Mostly because you are having so much damn fun. Either head banging, nodding, air guitaring, throwing horns, stomping around or however you enjoy your metal with a ton of energetic, killer songs.

Nothing here is really ground-breakingly new or outside the box, yet they do make it something of their own, mostly through their addition of some black metal plus their killer, on point songwriting. Everything is tight, well paced, in the right place and it just plain rocks. The production is modern but not at all ultra polished, just definitely not analog tape, every level seems to be right where it needs to be, right where it should be, got no complaints, it's just nice. The guitar tones are glorious, crushing, buzzsaws of deliciousness. The riffs they put forth are delectable, finger licking good. The bass and drums pound away perfectly, knowing just the right times to blast away or to just lay back in the groove, and the vocals are that harsh bark that makes you feel right at home with Swedish melodic death. You couldn’t ask for anything more. Put all this together in this nice package of an album and you get one monster of a fun record.

So go to Ontborg's Bandcamp page and buy "Within The Depths Of Oblivion" today. Turn your speakers, whatever they may be, way up, like super loud and start your own circle pit in your room. Go ahead, let loose, have fun, break shit if you like, just enjoy yourself with some truly good, fun, ripping, killer metal.
