Origin - Omnipresent

The corner of the metal spectrum that is technical death metal Origin seems to have things pretty much nailed. Origin probably has more of an influence on younger extreme bands forming at the moment then most of the staple death bands. Each album is an onslaught of technical brutality which showcases impeccable musicianship. For this writer their weak point has been a lack of individual stand out songs but their albums work as one piece of music. Each album being half hour or so lunacy and then leaves you suddenly back in reality wondering what the hell just happened.

I really admired on their last album "Entity" how they lost their vocalist and one guitarist and they carried on undeterred as a three piece and still managed to pull off a great album. This time around "Omnipresent" sees the debut of new front man Jason Keyser formally of Skinless who I am really happy to see back in action as I was a big fan of the Skinless album "Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead." His sole recording with the band. He fits like a glove here. "Omnipresent" in terms of brutality and technicality is a business as usual affair however it’s quite diverse and border’s into grindcore territory at times. The songs are short averaging at 2 minutes but none over 5. Like most Origin album’s everything just blast’s past the listener on the first couple of plays and takes a few listens to decode everything and get your head around what’s happening.

'Permanence' is like an adrenaline shot. It's a brilliant little introduction before 'Manifest Desolate' destroys the speaker's. Where I said earlier that they borderline grindcore I meant just that. The songs and the playing are too precise and clean sounding for grind fans. As chaotic as it is, it’s still very controlled and thought out. There’s the track 'Continuum' which is this brilliant little pause in the middle of the album. It’s a beautiful little instrumental with this spacey synth background with a wonderful melodic guitar solo over the top. It’s superb. It’s like in the middle of a nightmare you get catapulted into the sky and you get a small moment you get to admire the beautiful view for a split second before gravity grabs you and pulls you back into the chaos.

Overall Origin still haven’t topped their 2008 masterpiece "Antithesis" but they have on the other hand maintained the standard that album set and it’s great to see this album marking the beginning or a new era for the band. If you’re new to the band you might want to start with "Antithesis" or "Echo’s Of Decimation" but if you’re a fan there’s no reason why you won’t enjoy this.
