Overcharge - Accelerate
Italy’s Overcharge return with their debut full-length entitled "Accelerate". A quite excellent mixture of speed metal and punk. I usually don’t get into bands like this, but I must say that this album was quite enjoyable. What took me aback on this release was the energy on each and every one of these tunes. This is one of those types of bands that leaves me wondering that if they sound this good an energetic on cd, then what could they possibly sound like live! I was in no way prepared for what I heard on this album. It is definitely not what I expected. Hell, I wasn’t even sure I was going to like this, but I am extremely glad I got the chance to review this cd.
There’s only a little bit of distortion on the guitars as far as riffing goes, and even though they are labelled as a speed metal/punk band, the solos have a slight classical/thrashy edge to them that makes for a unique twist on this particular genre. They aren’t all that intricate or long, but they are played with so much pride and energy. You definitely get the feel that these guys love what they’re doing, and it’s evident that they do. You just don’t play music or create music with this much energy and not have an extreme love for it. There is definitely a punk influence in the riffs that carries over into the drums, however, the speed/punk line is really blurred and blended well in the drum work and the finished product gives off an almost thrash type vibe. Aside from these elements, there is also an unmistakable classical metal influence that the band includes in ever track just to push the envelope even further. When you hear bands like Overcharge, you learn to look beyond their immediate labels to see the different aspects and influences of the music. When you do this, you really learn to appreciate what they do even more.
I am very pleased with this album and look forward to hearing what they have to offer in the future. In listening to this cd, I attempted to put a finger on and pinpoint a relation to other bands and what this reminds me of. Motorhead and D.R.I. getting together and creating an album with a punkier version of early Sepultura vocals. An amazing sound to say the least and every metal head owes it to themselves to give this release a chance. If you want a breath of fresh air, yet something true to form you seriously need to get this cd and support this band. This is another fantastic release put out by Unspeakable Axe Records. Really, people, you all need to check this label out and support it. Everything on this label is of the highest quality. This latest effort by Overcharge is a prime example of that fact!
