Paganizer - Into The Catacombs
Now on album number eight, Paganizer’s mastermind Rogga Johansson (Demiurg, Ribspreader etc…) has been in this business for a good few years and knows a thing or two about proper old school death metal. ‘Vägråttor’ unleashes hell, there is barely a moment to take your breath, battering your head from every which way is not a difficult task for this band and introducing tiny elements of grind here and there really enhance the listening experience of this new album.
Rogga’s vocals are also rather intense, especially when it comes to ‘Panzer Truck’ or even ‘Their Skin Suits Me’. This track has some sounds of Florida’s Death in places, from the early days and progresses with groove and chugs into the Paganizer trademark old school Swedish death metal juggernaut. Digesting the songs on offer is not always an easy thing to do. As each track ends, the next freight train picks up speed and pulverizes your hearing from every corner of the room, no matter if you have an inferior sound system, the recorded output on ‘Into the Catacombs’ will be an building shattering experience on any sound system. The sound really does get into places that you may think does not exist, there is always an ever present feeling of compelling or controlled violent aggression, Paganizer’s style and energy demands your respect, and none are more worthy than this band whom have been in existence for over 14 years.
In a recent spate of Swedish Death Metal releases, Paganizer show some of the pretenders how it is all done, the quality of the material is constant, heavy and oh so pleasurable. So to put this into one sentence, if you like old school Swedish death metal then buying ‘Into the Catacombs’ is an easy decision… fact.
