Persefone - Core
Back in 2006 Andorran band Persefone released their sophomore album entitled simply “Core”. There was however nothing simple about the album itself. Now this much revered and highly sought after opus is being re-released with a couple of bonus tracks, one of which is an extremely impressive Star Wars instrumental medley that you absolutely have to hear!
“Core” is a very complex album, filled to the rafters with influences, styles and twists! Split into acts, “Core” displays a grand theatrical side and one that Persefone seems keen to progress with. With intricate, soulful melodies throughout, bolstered by a superb blend of raw, guttural vocals, cleaner spoken word and also beautiful, clean female vocals, you might be mistaken in thinking that Persefone are another symphonic metal band that have plagued Europe over the last decade, however nothing could be further from the truth! In actuality what Persefone produce is a sort of expansive progressive and melodic death metal with elements of Gothic and power metal influence woven deep within the fabric of their music!
Insane keyboard solos, wandering riff based melodies and intricate, technical guitar wankery are no strangers on “Core” whose eclectic mix of tastes and moods fit nicely over this lengthy but deeply absorbing album! Throw in the final touch, a more than ample pinch of progressive rock (I can hear much Genesis influence in this) and you have all you need for a totally engaging, complex and cerebral metal opus!
