Plague Angel - Stagnation Of Christ
Plague Angel's debut is like an epic death metal chopped and mixed into many smaller tracks rather than one big one. One can definitely hear influences from Vital Remains to Vomitory within this band, and in doing so, makes it CRUSH. 'Stagnation Of Christ' is indeed typical anti-Christian blasphemy, but it also takes the best of Satanic death metal bands and puts it to use. The production is fuzzy, but clear; the bass can be heard in many tracks which adds to the filthy, gritty sound, and makes the music all the more raw. The entire album feels on overdrive as it hammers away straight from the opening track, and even some of the riffs and layered vocals between the growls and higher pitched shrieks sound quite a bit like they came from the Vital Remains' 'Dechristianize' era. Not a bad influence at all.
Other tracks like "The Dawning..." are more in the Vomitory vein: more old school and not as fast as some of the other ones, but still furious, especially when they let the bass go right up against the guitars. Vocals tend to be more gutteral and incomprehensible, but they don't overtake everything and even through the riffs tend to get repetitive, they are groove laden and catchy as hell. "Shadowed" even digs further into the old school death metal territory by sounding a bit like Godless Rising, especially when it comes the the vocals sounding like Jeff Gruslin.
The demo bits do not differ much from the originals, except for more muddled production and the vocals have more of that 'microphone echo' to them. While interesting, fans may just pass them off as unwanted extras; especially since they don't differ too much from the original content that they just heard. Overall, this is a great start for these death metal heads and will most likely appease plenty of death metal fans that span all across the genre. Because after all, this is a very brutal groovy melodic album.
