Plow - Bicentennial Picnic

This is a self-release of four tracks by the quartet from Denmark. This is their debut and it is available for digital download from their website. They were originally a two-piece before meeting some friends from school and adding a bass and a bigger rhythm section. They themselves identify with stoner rock/metal.

The album is very easy going, with long notes, beats and lyrics. I can now see why they call this stoner metal! Throughout the album there are bits of different influences, from heavy metal, to doom to alternative sludge.

This kicks off in a great way with the first song, Bad Day For A Picnic.  The well mixed, and well-threaded sound is not cacophonous, in fact it works in harmony with each other and with the vocal and is the perfect introduction to the Plow sound – double guitars with a threaded bass and simple drumbeats.

This is then followed up and used in every song, with the slower, more melodic metal good for listening to when you want to chill out. Forrow of Doom is a slightly harder, deeper song but only shows the mix of their influences, with some darker metal coming to the fore here. High Tide is another slow and steady song, except with a faster guitar than the last two. This is a lot calmer and less heavy, and the guitars are strung on the rhythmic structure that is provided by the drummer.

The vocal work throughout is clear and easy to listen to, and changes slightly with every song, as do the genres of the songs themselves. These slight shifts allow the full talents of each member to be showcased, as is the norm with a debut album. If you’re new to the stoner metal scene, as I am, then this could be the perfect introduction, specifically because it doesn’t go in too far and still has elements of other sub-genres as a recognisable header for the otherwise initiated.
