Poison Sun - Virtual Sin

Hermann Frank maybe be famous for his role in German Heavy Metal legends Accept, but little known is this band Poison Sun, featuring none other than Hermann’s wife Martina on vocals, who also plays a major part in the songwriting duties. Her previous musical accolades include backing vocals for the likes of UFO and this band is all about classic rock, blues and very much metal to put into one sentence.

Opening track ‘Voodoo’ musically sounds like Phantom Blue’s “Built to Perform” era (‘Time to Run’ with Gigi Hangach on vocals), and also similar to young unsigned Scottish band Firebrand Superock, bouncy, rhythmic guitars with wailing vocals that are as strong as an ox, there are no weak gothic metal crap vocals here, Martina is a real female metal singer. Similar in style to a mix of the aforementioned Gigi Hangach, Janet Gardener (Vixen), Zed Yago’s Jutta Weinhold with the energy and aura of the metal queen Doro Pesch herself. ‘Red Necks’ is full volume, high-octane metal action, Mr Frank shows off his finger skills to perfection and the ‘Metal Heart’ album (Accept) sounding ‘Hitman’ certainly hits the spot as it follows on with some aggressive but infectious tones. Ok so it is fair to say that if you’re a fan of some Accept tunes and most recently UDO’s material, then you will get and you will enjoy this release. ‘Rider in the Storm’ and ‘Phobia’ are genuine metal classics in the making, I just love the atmosphere that these arrangements bring, no anger, simply fist raising metal attacks of genius. This statement even holds true with the Pointer Sisters cover ‘Excited’, remember the more recent Cadbury’s Crunchie Chocolate bar TV advert? Well, you ought to know this one then! It is actually rather good beefed up with the guitar, and whole-heartedly as annoyingly memorable as the original recording, but you have to love it!

This is quite a stunning hook-laden album.  Poison Sun have lots of good ideas and positive song structures, it would be true to say that another metal gem enters the fold and ‘Virtual Sun’ is an album to rely upon in this ever-changing metal world we live in.
