Postmortem - Seeds Of Devastation

Germany's Postmortem are akin to Six Feet Under and Hail Of Bullets in the sense that they use deep, gutteral vocals but also a sense of 'rock n' roll' within their aggressive styles. Postmortem tends to stick to the brutal and gory side of things, but with their latest album they've actually stepped a bit outside their comfort zone of focusing on sex, killing, and fetishes and delving more into... war themes? Yes, it appears that 2010 has been very popular with that, from God Dethroned to Tank to Hail Of Bullets to about sixteen other bands who all either wanted to focus on some aspect of the WW. Postmortem for the most part focus on war in general, but still have a bit of fun with it by making it as gory as possible while at the same time also inspiring a bit patriotism with a slight nod at humor, such as with "Blood Spangled Banner."

The band even seems to have added a bit of thrash elements too to their music. Aside from the usual death chug n' roll on tracks like "Ghost Of The Warship" which just steamrolls its way through, there are other tracks such as "Dark New World" which features a great, catchy rhythm and thunders along with a bit of groove that could very well be thrash territory. "Prelude To Devestation" is one of the instrumentals on the album, but it is more of an interlude that features rolling tanks and chirping birds; more of a distraction than enjoyment. However, the last track, "Waranthem," offers some of the best death rock and roll ever heard, minus the vocals, but still extremely catchy and crisp as far as production goes.

Fans of catchy death metal in general along the lines of Vader to Grave to Death will more than likely find this album an exciting listen. The best part is probably the production where everything has a crisp feel to it without feeling too overwhelming. Postmortem should be proud of their efforts to get experimentally as far as themes and lyrics go while still keeping to the death metal crede of adding just a bit of splatter to make things interesting.
