Powerstroke - Done Deal
Thrash meets metalcore = Powerstroke. And after listening to their new album 'Done Deal' I'm sure many will agree on my theory that these Belgium riff-obsessives sound like Trivium and Killswitch's hyperactive love-child!
'Done Deal' is absolutely packed with stand-out choruses, mostly cleanly sung, almost heavenly and in the veins of Fear Factory's style too. The screams are vicious, very throaty and rough sounding that hold the band's metal nature throughout. Instrumental wise the album has everything; It's mostly thrash based but there's a lot to take in truthfully, especially as each track becomes recognisable, and easily digestible for the human ears, 'Hold On' demonstrates this best with all of their most outstanding moments placed within one song.
Opener 'Blood Oasis' is a head-banging anthem desperately seeking metalheads worldwide as it begins the album you need to hear this year. The vocal range is a perfect contrast on everything modern in the metal genre. 'Walk The Talk' has a slightly slower paced beginning entry, delving deep into the band's impressive variety, that is of course before it's grizzly beast-mode becomes active, yet their guitar solo is mesmerising within the continued pummelling riffs of this aggressively based track.
'Your Funeral, No Trial' has an opening parade of thundering-attention deserving riffs that will have you banging your head for days whilst following effort, 'Judge Rules No Violence' has an almost drunkenly sounding gang-chant that blows out into an array of yelps as their metalcore title reigns most supreme here. The frantic belts of screams continue rapidly on 'Poetry To A Pig' before erupting into another soothing chorus, melodic and calming against everything else within the track.
The album boasts of many inspirations and peers, from the likes of At The Gates, Mendeed, Bullet For My Valentine and many more I could name, therefore ceasing the question, when will Powerstroke find their own unique sound? Certainly not now, and perhaps never, but that doesn't stop this record from raging on, as it will be one of 2016's more fun albums to listen to, and ultimately not reigning in the attention it genuinely deserves.
