Pripjat - Sons Of Tschernobyl
Hailing from Germany and formed from the ashes of Hate Seven. Pripjat have delivered a pretty solid slice of thrash. It's full of energy and speed of the early years of thrash say early Megadeth or Exodus rather then the heaviness of say, Kreator or later day thrash. I dare say there's a bit of punk thrown in too there is a little streak of Suicidal Tendencies here and there.
The thing that makes the band stand out is the vocals of Kirill Gromada he has a high screech vocal that is simular to Brian Johnson of AC/DC but more harsh. His vocals will be the deciding factor for most listeners. They will either take to them and love them automatically get turned off. It's not a major problem as all the greats devide opinion King Diamond is a classic example but it's a relevant point. Tracks like 'Red Disease' show the band can have a good stab at melody but for the most of the album they concetrate on keeping the tempo and pace fast and furious. 'Nuclear Chainsaw' is a particular highlight in that department. The band are on fire. That and 'Liquidators' show off Kerry King esque solo's granted not the most original but the fact that their pulling them off is to be respected.
To sum things up "SonO of Tschernobyl" is a very good debut album with everything in the right place. It shows a band pointing in the right direction and will be interesting to see in the future how the band develop in terms of song writing and distinguishing their own sound. Well worth a listen but store this uner "ones to watch" the best is yet to come...
