Psychofagist - Songs Of Faint And Distortion
Technical progressive brutal music is starting to become very popular. I think bands are tired of coming up with the same fast paced heavy guitar riff and double bass drum attack, so they decide to incorporate progressive fusion elements to change up their sound. Psychofagist is an Italian band who plays Technical Death Metal with a grindcore fusion side to create extreme fusion metal songs. Their music sounds like a mix between The Dillinger Escape Plan and Godflesh. On their most recent album, "Songs Of Faint And Distortion", Psychofagist makes heavy rapid firing songs that can change tempo out of nowhere. These guys really like to change it up musically which demands a high level of musicianship. With all these different technical parts the songs tend to be rather short with a couple exceptions. All the members in this band do an exceptional job contributing to the overall mind bending sound. Besides the shouting vocal style I like how this album sounds and find the production to give their music a huge boost.
As I have said before Psychofagist has this unique ever changing style of music that provides a powerful punch while going off in many musical directions. The first song 'Blankness Reigns Supreme' is an introduction to the bandʼs fusion Technical Death Metal style. Right away the drummer is creating these complex beats and keeps changing up his speed/timing. I really like the bass playing on the first track because this bass player has a killer tone. When he plays a riff the sound echoes with tremendous force. Another awesome song where the bass player completely steals the show is, 'Digression Into Distortion'. He plays a very catchy mellow sounding riff over this gloomy atmosphere. Psychofagist does deviate away from the fusion based sound sometimes and goes for more atmospheric sounding tracks that do offer some variation on the album. I really liked the song, 'Song Of Faint'. Not only is this the longest track, but it combined a large variety of metal elements and to me was the bandʼs most ambitious sounding song. The song starts out slow, but becomes heavier as the song progresses. Vocally I am not as enthusiastic when it comes to the song, and personally the rest of the album. This vocalist tends to shout instead of singing and it reminds me of a protestor yelling through a megaphone. It does compliment the intense fusion music at times, and those are usually the best tracks.
I think after listening to this album a couples times I became mentally overwhelmed by the crazy technical sound that is Psychofagist. Sometimes I feel like the instruments are still rattling around in my head even after I am done listening to this album. "Songs Of Faint And Distortion" shows how heavy metal can be pushed to new boundaries by experimenting with different timings and sounds. Personally, I am not a huge fan of this type of music, but I do respect the musicianship on the album and Psychofagistʼs desire to experiment. Anyone who enjoys technical fusion experimental metal should check this album out. Also, prepare for the unexpected when listening to Psychofagist because these guys throw more twists and turns into their music than a roller coaster... barf bags not included.
