Puteraeon - Cult Cthulhu

This is old school death metal from Sweden, the bands second full length album and I have to admit I have followed this band since their second demo way back in 2008. Roll forward a few years and there is even more improvement compared to their last full length ‘The Esoteric Order’. ‘Cult Cthulhu’ follows a path that is marginally slower compared to previous efforts, but the quality of the arrangements has improved. I put this down to the rest of the bands influence in the song writing as main man Jonas Lindblood is not the only writer now in Puteraeon.

SweDeath is always going to sound similar in some respects, but with Andy LaRocque (King Diamond/Death) production there bleeds a new vision. Songs can be utterly heavy and still retain a pleasant, almost earthy tone, and by that I mean you gain the usual rotten sound but the pleasentaries comes with clever use and inspiration of H.P. Lovecraft’s tales. Of course, its what’s beneath the earth which usually describes this bands rottenness and for good measure Rogga Johannsson (Paganizer, Demiurg, Ribspreader, The Grotesquery, etc…) lends his vocal talents, furthermore staking a pure Swedeath nail in the coffin. ‘Children of Dagon’ and in particular ‘Conlaceratus’  are stand out tracks, the ability of the listener to bury oneself beneath the surface of the carnage will reap it’s just rewards, have a go, there is much more creeping under the surface on ‘Cult Cthulhu’, especially bowel wrenching slow heavy tracks like ‘In the Vault’.

Stepping up to the challenge, Puteraeon have rewarded SweDeath fans with something a little bit different, there is clear musical ability and pride to be gained in the songs arrangements, it’s not all about brutality. Far from me to renounce their historical brutality, it is still here, it is still loud, Puteraeon remain thoroughly soul crushing but have gained a greater sense of song writing on this sophomore effort.
