Ragehammer - War Hawks
Heavy distorted noise driven Black/Thrash Metal. If that description does not peak your metal interest then I don’t know what else will. Ragehammer is a Polish group of metal maniacs who combine Black Metal and Thrash Metal to come up with brilliant axe grinding heavy music. Their sound is a mix between Mayhem meets Toxic Holocaust. At times the riffs and drums are extremely intense, but slow down to add a dark ambient feel. Their recent release “War Hawks” is a five song EP that throws the listeners into a realm of heavy metal chaos. The opening song “Ragehammer Rising” begins with a lightening fast galloping killer thrash riff which is accompanied by a machine gun sounding drum rhythm. Here the listener is also introduced to the singer’s harsh style of singing which lasts for about the entire album. The contrast of Black Metal and Thrash Metal works great giving this opening song a head banging groove. On the next song,”Prophet of Genocide,” Ragehammer decides to slow the music down by coming up with a dark ambient piece. This track highlights their Black Metal style more then the opening song. The chord progressions used create this gloomy atmosphere that is covered by a blanket of distortion. Song three “Hate Command” goes back to the mix of Thrash and Black Metal with a bone ripping palm muted riff. Ragehammer comes up with another morbid skull crushing song and shows their musical consistency. The last couple songs do not deviant from the beginning tracks and are highly worth checking out too.
What I enjoyed most about this album is the Thrash Metal mixed with Black Metal guitar riffs. I am all about heavy sounding Thrash riffs with something more to offer than just the usual cross-over Thrash style. However, numerous bands have mixed Black Metal and Thrash before, so unfortunately Ragehammer is not doing anything new and innovating. Still, I did enjoy their overall sound and attitude on this EP. The production on this album may not be clean, but that is what makes Ragehammer unique in their own way. I like heavily distorted guitars and vocal parts that sound like they were recorded in some shack on a small tape deck. If you like Black Metal, Thrash Metal, and harsh screeching sounding vocals on top of intense distorted guitar riffs then I recommend this album. Ragehammer is full of rage and this EP demonstrates a band who will come to your town and burn everything down... Besides the local record store that sells their albums... If your town still has a record store.
