Rising Dark - Apocalyptic

Fresh out the a thrash master class, Italy’s Rising Dark are indeed a dark horse, I wonder where this band have been hiding! ‘Apocalyptic’ is their debut album, and the thrash monster resides somewhere between some of Testament’s greatest output and modern day Onslaught. Rooted deep in melody, and brandishing solo’s that are normally reserved for genre stalwarts, Rising Dark make an immediate impression, it’s rather an exhausting, but good experience. Listen to the riff and resulting tirade on ‘The Bofoid’, in fact I think it’s much more exciting than one of the aforementioned bands recent output…but you have to decide which one!

Michael Crimson’s vocals are somewhere between Chuck Billy (more so) and Tom Angelripper, the tight thrash arrangements simply power on with a great sense of accomplishment, effortless sound quality and a keen ear for what a thrash fan would want to hear. Rising Dark have the art of keeping the momentum going, without sacrificing quality for speed as some young bands do. Still the shining beacon is the comfort zone you are rivalling in with each arrangement, hook and melody. There are some screams and shouts, but they are all tasteful and relevant. Rising Dark are really relevant, and I feel that if these guys had showed up on the scene a few years ago, we could have had another success story like Evile.

‘Apocalyptic’ is an essential album for any thrash fan worth their salt. Bringing an old mind on a young head, Rising Dark have all the thrashing aces, their real joker is the key melodies that are bounded about with every opportunity. You can do no wrong taking a chance with this album but ignore the trashcore tags in the PR material, as it has nothing to do with that genre.
