Rorcal - Myrra, Mordvynn, Marayan
This is Swiss band's first full length album - and its a pretty monstrous debut! Crushing, tortured, avante-garde doom/sludgecore is what is on offer here, and clearly the band don't do anything by halves. The songs are very long, with a large amount of diversity - in fact they seem to have packed a hell of a lot into the nine songs; at full throttle the band deliver pounding, harsh and atonal riffing, combined with hoarse, bellowed vocals, at other moments we are treated to eerie acoustic passages and drifting psychadelia. Occasionally they remind me of MAUDLIN OF THE WELL, but also MASTADON and NEUROSIS.
After listening to the album in one sitting, I had to check frequently for nosebleeds - so far I seem to be safe! This is an incredibly intense album, and not easy listening in any sense. Occasionally we are treated to a beautiful guitar harmony, but these rarely last more than a few seconds before the harsh and jarring riffing kicks your face in again. At some points I found the hypnotic harshness of the album a bit too much and my attention started to wander. A few more hooks would have kept me happy - but this album is definitely not designed to keep anyone happy, its one of the bleakest albums I've heard in ages!
