Rotting Away - Rise From Decay
What does a young female death metal lover and growler do, when she finds no decent band members to fulfill her dream of playing old school death metal? Of course she calls daddy to the game! And when the father is as experienced as mr Uriel Aguillon is (growls & guitar on Gutwrench), then we can only think of at least an album that won't make us think twice on having bought it! In fact "Rise From Decay" which is Rotting Away's second demo for 2012, is a lot more than that! Iris Aguillon which is I believe the brain in this whole release and band, seems to be having a crystal clear vision on how old school death metal should be played!
'Within Thy Curse' marks the beginning of the killing season and starts off with a couple seconds of low volume death shrieks and music, serving the cause of the intro, until the actual song takes place. When the kill starts, it is clear that it couldn't be better! Death metal tunes breathing the 90s air and exhaling a breath so nasty, that makes demise look like a joke, as it continues to the second part of this doom bringing release! 'Beholding The Horror' is the second song on this demo and is here to straighten things out to those who didn't get the message yet! Only old school here lads. Anyone wanting hyper blasts and new age death metal stuff can get the fuck out! Riffs that reeeek, crawling slowly and painfully, making your backbone paralyze with how well they are constructed to a song! The bass is loud and fat adding weight to the entire result and the drums are holding the whole thing together with mainly mid tempo beats that turn the whole old school thing into a real nightmare for the competitors out there!! 'The Soul-absorbing Void' is on the same tracks as the previous two songs and takes the rottenness a bit further! Autopsy meets Grave meets Entombed meets whatever old school top class band you wanna add! It is an amalgam of all the good elements we all loved in the genre at it's birth! Rotting Away's demo rounds up with a last and fourth song which is the title track, leaving everyone with the best impressions and great expectations for the future.
I deliberately wanted to leave the vocal matter last because I wouldn't want anyone having the wrong impression that this is another female fronted death metal band that the only thing keeping it alive is the singer's tits and nothing more! In fact whoever does think that way will definitely miss an opportunity of listening to a well played and inspirational old school death metal demo! The vocals are great and yes you guessed correctly! A little girl sometimes is good enough to do death metal vocals that would make a lot of growlers cry! It just takes vision and potential and my guess is that Iris Aguillon has both! So test your guts ladies and gentlemen. Give Rotting Away the pleasure of squashing your bowels into a mush!
