Rotting Empire - Sui Generis

With a demo and an EP of 2007, out so far, these Bavarians decided that it was time for their full length. So 5 years later, and with heavy mist, covering all the info, on this long period of ice, the band went through, we move on to listening to this first full length of them! Heavy riffs, fat bass sound, steady and solid drum performance with no unnecessary exaggerations, just keeping it all together, and a growler that mostly chooses to growl but here and thereĀ  likes to alter his voice to more shrieky tones, conduct a fine death metal debut from a band that seems to do exactly what they say in their info: have fun and get drunk through music.

So another band that chooses death metal as a getaway, and if you ask me, their aspect on how it should be played, is truly the honest one! You will not have to re arrange your thoughts on death metal, after you listen to "Sui Generis". That's for sure! If we have to be hard on our review, we have to say that Rotting Empire is not the best band out there, and "Sui Generis" is definitely not the best piece of art, there is for 2012! Not even close to that. You will probably find tons of other releases, and bands to touch your wicked soul. But pay close attention to this lads. You will not find many bands, so true to what they CAN do! Those deathsters here, are really dedicated to what they do, and would not claim glory other than this that they deserve. This means that in this first full length you will not listen to studio mambo jumbo, magic tricks, that make a band look like gods, and when they get up on stage cannot perform it properly, nor you will listen to what's fashionable in death metal nowadays!

No sir! Music for them is important so, by listening to this piece of art you will listen to well played death metal, with thrashy interleaves, and some classical and atmospheric interpolations here and there. Well played indeed. They go as far as their reach allows them, but in this range no matter how big or small it is, they are killers! They blend the atmosphere they obviously like so much, with the extreme element so beautiful, that you almost get swept away instantly and the 45 minutes, this album lasts, seem like nothing. Over and over again, what this album reeks is honesty! From performance issues to song composition and structure. Honesty in their music is their big weapon and I am sure that this is an aspect of death metal that is so underestimated nowadays! Won't make you lose your sleep, but definitely is worthy a shot lads. Grab a six pack and give it its change.
