Salvation 666 - Anima Pestifera

Salvation 666 take the idea of 'raw and primitivei' and put it to the max with their debut album 'Anima Pestifera.' As expected of black metal, it is very minimalistic and evil sounding, but doesn't really do anything that bands such as Sargeist, Darkthrone, Khold, Beherit, Mayhem, and early Marduk haven't done before. It's all buzz saw riffs, throaty vocals, and sheer speed for the most part when it comes to this band. Tracks like "Anima Pestifera" are scorching blazers that are exciting at first, but interest dies out for the repetitive style of the vocals and guitars. The drums, however, keep the interest. They have a unique 'can bang' sound to them that sound like someone put a percussion inside a metal drum can and felt like beating on it for a while. The sound is very unorthodox, very ugly, and works to Salvation 666's advantage.

There are some tracks with a bit more 'thought' involved than just sheer blast beats and tremolo picking. "Oderint, Dum Metuant" has a lengthy interlude where all of a sudden the chaos stops, and it is like the eye of the storm. The sound is very progressive, almost acoustic. It is a stark contrast of what fans will have just heard before, and offers some solace before the raging storm of black metal picks up again. "Finis Coronat Opus" parts 1 and 2 are also special. Part 1 is the usual raging, evil black metal sound that Salvation666 performs. Part 2, however, is another one of those 'left field' tracks. It's all orchestral and symphonic, making for a great closer (or possible introduction). Fortunately, Salvation 666 take the high road and instead of being typical, make it their outro instead of intro, which so many other bands tend to do.

Overall, it will take probably newbies to black metal to really appreciate this, those who think that donning corpsepaint and playing distorted riffs while shrieking is about as good as black metal can get. Those who have experienced quite a few bands already will either consider this 'already done' or 'in blatant need of some more changes to stand out.' Compared to Emperor, Dark Funeral, and Dodheismgard, Salvation 666 have a long way to go. Still, for only two individuals in the band, their sound is impressive. They are certainly on the right track and as long as they keep a varied tone to the music while still retaining that old school feel to their buzzing guitars, they can possibly step out of the shadows of so many other legends, and become one themselves.
