Sanktuary - Something Fierce
Hailing from the farthest reaches of Canada, The Yukon, Sanktuary are a band hot on the heels of their contemporaries laying down a mix of classic metal, power metal (US) and thrash all in one debut album release that is presented in a very nice digipak format.
‘Heat Lightning’ and ‘Hail the Villain’ really get the ball rolling and fans of the recent surge of traditional metal, especially a vocal sounding like Cauldron and a style of the latter aforementioned like the UK’s Dark Forest, Sanktuary can really nail their intentions to you. You may wander into some speed metal for the pacier numbers like the thrasher ‘Thrill of the Kill’, but you are in very good place. Galloping rhythms delight as do the overall sound recording and song arrangements. There is certainly an element of excitement clear to hear in their musical repertoire.
‘Fire in the Sky’ has a ‘Coma of Souls’ style to the tempo and delivery possessing a raspy thrash code of deliverance too, in fact like the thrash band Mutant. Whilst on the majority of tracks there are more traditional metal melodies, a song like ‘Midnite Mass’ really gets the theme nailed. It is not all perfect, sometimes the higher notes go off a little, but this is nothing too sad and the ideas are clear enough and credit where credit is due, you don’t get disappointed.
This is a mix of great musical genres, delivering a real exuberant energy and clear passion, Sanktuary are certainly worth checking out. For the ideas and music I have rated it so, for the little niggles you may here, I have forgotten about them as I have enjoyed this release overall and Sanktuary have real promise.
