Sathanas - Worship The Devil
I don’t really understand how this blackened death metal horde from the USA have passed me by, as I delve into their discography based on the excellent results of this current evil child, I see they have been recording since 1988, their first album appeared in the mid 90’s. So apart from my mission to track those releases down, ‘Worship the Devil’ is a very good old ritual of the darker side of existence. The song structures and presentation of American bands in this sub-genre do tend to be simply different from the usual European sound, there is something a touch more learned and professional about this recording and bands from this continent.
The icy start to ‘Written in Blood’ enhances your senses, starts to make you feel on edge with the eerie wind noise in the background and then release comes with the quite compressed guitar sound with plenty of trailing string work akin to the blacker side of the metal world. Then enter the main riff, the drums pound and anger the evil one with by producing such a wicked vocal tone. This is much more melodic black that a blackened death approach, outside of the raw side, the coolest of the sub-genre for me with a mid tempo feel running consistently. ‘Marked by the Beast’ heralds the arrival of a stunning heads down battering with a cool augmented progression with a touch more death influence here in the main verse of the track, hence the hybrid but still nasty approach of this band. Blackened enough to master the dark arts they lyrical theme exhumes, but tailored professionally enough to have a touch of finesse about the recording itself. ‘Upon the Edge of Darkness’ has a groovy latter (first period) Immortal sound with a sense of heritage driving towards some of the more Viking approach of Bathory. That’s probably inaccurate for the purists, I quite understand but its where I put it.
Sathanas produce tunes that you can really get into, it’s nasty but controlled and has enough of a crossover to satisfy much more fans than any single “necro” tinged release could even achieve through a pretty stellar production. ‘Worship the Devil’ is a natural successor to their previous material and ticks numerous boxes on many levels.
