Saturnus - Saturn In Ascension
Saturnus, who hail from Denmark, deliver a soft, melodic doom metal sound that is almost erotic with "Saturn In Ascension". Hearing the words doom metal, the first band that comes to mind is Candlemass and then Black Sabbath (who were doom metal before there was such a thing). The interesting thing about this album, is although a doom metal genre, it generates a lot more feeling than loss, sorrow and death which is what most bands in this genre center around.
This album delivers a swift kick in the throat followed by a soft caress. Because the first track is so amazing, starting out with a children's choir (cue creepy horror movie) and going into a sullen array of chords and drums, I will admit that I was worried. Time has shown me that when an album is released with a great first track the rest of the songs tend to be sub par.
There are so many variations of sound and instruments that listening to this album became an adventure. "Saturn In Ascension" took me to a dark, snowy forest in medieval times, then a candlelit bedroom cloaked in shadows with a demon chained in the corner.
Even the ballad 'A Lonely Passage' sets a mood as the vocalist talks through some of the song (he talks in a lot of the songs) and repeats "I'm so tired" which got in my head and I started thinking, 'yeah, I'm pretty tired.' How cool is that? The last album that really got in my head, changed my mood and made me go to a deeper level of consciousness was 'Bloody Kisses' by Type O Negative. Laurie Ann Haus does the guest vocals on this track which adds a sense of haunting beauty.
If you're into music that is dark with a little more emotion than classic doom metal, you definitely owe it to yourself to check out "Saturn In Ascension".
