Scrambled Defuncts - Souls Despising The God

Russian brutal deathsters, Scrambled Defuncts, latest album, Souls Despising The God is a very interesting listen and i have to admit quite far removed from previous offerings. This is their 3rd full length with other releases being abit more "normal" sounding brutal death metal.

Upon first listen, one is greeted by the sound of symphonic orchestral music amidst the crushing guitars, blasting drums and guttural vocals. What the fuck i said upon this first listen!! But pay attention!!! This strangely works! And clearly alot of thought in the writings has gone into this. It creates a dark brooding atmosphere throughout the whole album. Yes, it is thorughout the whole album but to some that may put you off but do give it a chance because its a different slant and thats cool. The whole thing sounds like an epic horror movie whilst getting pulverised!!!

The production on offer is immaculate. It would need to be really to get the whole environment across on cd. The mix of all instruments, orchestral and electric instruments is amazing. The guitars are super heavy and chunky. These are backed up by some incredible battery from the drums with unrelenting blast beats, huge fills and jackhammer double bass. The bass work on the cd cant really be heard and i feel that this could have been turned up a pinch in the mix but hell, theres alot of instrumentation here on the cd and its hard to get it all right. Vocally, the album is guttural, just the way i like it and really hammers the whole feel of the album home in brutal death metal context of course. Now i really dug the vibe of this album but i know some may not but i cant recommend enough for you to give this a chance. The album clocks in at just alittle under 50 mins but yet the whole album feels quite like a concept album almost. One track cant just be heard, it all needs to be listened to so that the listener can really be be enveloped by the whole cd as a piece.  Now granted as you approach the end of the cd, the orchestration wares on you just slightly but its a fantastic listen. Its dark, heavy and very brutal and does not let up for one second. This cd marks a pinnacle for this band for sure and i really hope it opens new doors and avenues for them. A trully interesting listen thats haunting, terrifying and just the right blend of classical and absolutely punishing death metal. Check it fuckin` out!
