Severe Mutilation - Spawn Of Hatred

Settin off in the right foot is the root to a good start on whatever you're doin. And these guys here just gained my attention by their cover artwork instantly cos this fucker really felt familiar! While breaking my head to see where I had come across such artwork, I was happy to see that the overall layout of this CD is a creation of my good buddy here in Greece, lead singer of the crazy ass Greek brutal fuckers Mortal Torment, and also responsible for tons of other sick artworks, mr Giannis-Remedy Art-Nakos for Remedy Art Design. Check him out definitely.

So since the introduction was more than overwhelming, and since I know that crazy John would never work with a bullshit band, I am almost certain that this is going to be a good one! So let's have a closer look into these ravagers from Puerto Rico and their new sick piece of brutality for 2013, with title "Spawn Of Hatred". Severe Mutilation is a relatively new band. They released their first demo back in 2008 and this is their second full length, succeeding a 2011 demo and their first full length of 2010. Quite a movement for a 6 year old band don't you think? Their style is a combination of old school death metal, fully inspired by Morbid Angel, Monstrocity , Immolation, and other death metal beasts of this kind, but with a more up to date touch, mostly on the production line and on the riffing sector, which by the way, does not hesitate to flirt with the thrash genre a bit! Not bad at all. Wait til you listen to them.

Their songs are perfectly structured and composed in such way that they tend to bring the tension out, allowing almost no space for atmosphere. Straight forward death metal riffs, followed by blasting drums, a decent growler and a fat bass line, cease only to give their place to thrash outbursts and then maybe here and there, some more slow crawling riffs, but don't get mislead by that term, the slow crawling riffs serve no atmosphere purpose here. It is only time bought for them to reload their guns and start shooting again! I guess they are just part of this tradition that wants the majority of those Latin American bands that follow the extreme sound, unaware of the term 'Playing smoothly and giving the listener his time to adjust'. Fuck that. For these freaks here there's only one way to play extreme music and that is no other than keeping everything to the maximum. The Aggression, the technicality, the wrath and the tension are all on the red zone of the limiter and this is how it should be! The opening of the CD gives the perfect example of what will follow upon the hearing of this atrocity, a big dialog, (probably a movie and I think I've seen it, just can't remember which one), and then someone sayin "God is not here today priest"… So there you go. Just make sure God's not around and push the play button. And if it so happens to see him while listening, just raise the middle finger and turn this shit louder!!
