Slamophiliac - Slam Rehab

Slam obsessor Slamophiliac is a one-man internet project from the USA, 'Slam Rehab' is the 2017 release. I don't know if I can keep saying the word slam without getting sick of it myself by the end of this review. But as slam is definitely a favourite of mine, it's great to know I'm never alone in this world in that aspect.

Personally I'm more a fan of the touring / live shows, so Slamophiliac is beyond that, ceasing as only a "band" on the world wide web. Whilst this isn't always a negative aspect, more of a personal preference on my end, it does bug me to know I'll never see Slamophiliac in action. This is especially disappointing when you read up on their influences and see some of your favourite extreme bands listed, such as Defeated Sanity, Cerebral Effusion, and more.

As for the initial album itself, 'Slam Rehab' is mostly mashed together, like one massive song rather than the ten tracks it actually is. Failing to fulfil the thought of the album being somewhat recognisable between the tracks is something that I can't comprehend. Despite half the tracks having guest vocalists, it's still too difficult to distinguish amongst them.

The album starts with slams, and ends with...yep...that's right...slams! And what's not to like? Slamming brutality punishing the listener with great production, often technical grinding riffs, finished off with a howl-like screeching vocal style. The vocals are really different and thoroughly enjoyable, probably my favourite thing about Slamohphiliac. This technique is the lead style on the vocals throughout, and often you're wanting more variety, but it's the instrumental side of the album that lacks diversity in my opinion as I personally really love the vocal style.

Attractive album artwork gains the record additional praise, but all in all the album lacks something, and that something is what I love about extreme metal. Everything minus the vocals sounds largely over-produced, and too fake. Too much internet and not enough realism for me. Perhaps another personal preference. I would love to see Slamophiliac really change things up on a future release, grab a couple more members, slow things down a little and get more creative on the next album.
