Sudden Access - Piece Of Enemy
The Dutch band Sudden Access is searching for a label and I think this metal core group is worth some attention. The call themselves thrash, but I think they are more influenced by hardcore than by bands like Slayer or Sepultura (even though there still might be a bit of those bands in Sudden Access’ sound). They have been playing in The Netherlands since 2002, when they first gathered their arms and went to war in the Dutch musical jungle. I often think of contemporary Swedish hardcore metalers The Haunted when I want to think about metaleasque hardcore of today, but in reality there is actually more metal in Sudden Access’ sound than there is in The Haunted. The Haunted is of course quite heavy in their way, but Sudden Access riffs more deliberately like a classic metal band than like a hardcore band ever has I think,. I guess this could be why the band refers to itself as a “thrash’ as well as a “hardcore” band.
I think case in point of the metal vs hardcore sounds in Suddenn Access is found in PIECE OF ENEMY’s fourth track, “Cage of Depression.” It opens with some slow full guitar distortions that turn into actual riffing. Quite heavy. The vocals enter quite out of the field of straight hardcore (not too growly but angry), but as the guitars keep pushing the border of the song to the end, the drums are double-kicked with a ferociousness and speed that could only be influenced by old-school muscular thrash metal. The nest track on the CD, “Deception,” continues in this vein except during the first few moments of the vocals in that track, there is something of the depressive sound about them, a sound that is only metal.
This CD was surely not made to appeal to every fan of metal because dedicated fans of absolute black metal will probably not tolerate it. But there is lots of room in this group for fans on the edges of the Pig Destroyer scene or of The Fallen. I say check it out, and if you happen to know the right people with the right kind of label, contact the band with the good news of signing potential.
