Suma - Ashes
Third full length album from this band from Sweden. Released on their own label this CD lasts for over 1 hour and contains 5 songs.. So you might expect this is some kind of doom.. and it is!.. Specifically stoner doom..
Starting with a stoner riff based intro and pounding drums the atmosphere is already set.. Smoke some weed and sit back... because this is going to take some time...
The riffs are heavy, dirty and repetetive as well as the drums who put in some variation but keeping it simple. The songs are building up tension and extra atmosphere is provided by layered guitar melodies with a hypnotizing sound. And then of course there is the unavoidable doom parts and semi clean guitar intermezzos dragging you into a void of utter despair. The vocals are desperate cries from a pissed off person locked up in the cellars of a mental institution... I couldnt describe this otherwise... but it takes part in the whole atmosphere, although I think more than half the running time of this disc is instrumental so it's not overdone..
Great album.. If you haven't heard them yet and if you're into stoner doom and sludge this is definitely worth checking out!
