Super Fun Happy Slide - Drop Your Pants & Grind
Australian grind mongers Super Fun Happy Slide already have a slew of releases out via either self released CDr or via the label Blastasfuk and with their tongues firmly in their cheeks this quirky grind act utilises an old school approach that brandishes some thrash and hardcore elements to add variety to their aural onslaught complete with the odd sample.
Quite how much grindcore a collector of extreme music needs in their collection is highly debatable as much of the output relies on the groundbreaking efforts made by bands such Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Nasum, SOB, to name a few notable acts from the past. This second album from the Aussie grinders more or less situates itself within the mid to late 80s when grindcore was utterly battering and balanced by inhuman production values which added that ferocity factor often missing from today's grind due to over production, in my opinion. Many of the so called humourous grind acts use very silly song titles that can be quite misogynistic if taken too seriously. So from the moment the title track starts with its old rock sample and guitar solo the music muscles its way into quality grind riffs and accompanying thundering blast as you'd expect. Awarding decent scores to grind bands can be quite difficult due to the similarity of the songs overall but at least SFHS attempt, successfully, to mix up their songs with a variety of riffing styles such as the hardcore start to 'Gift Wrapped Ballsack'. I know you are smirking now and that song title should give you an indication as to the direction and style SFHS have adopted as they harness the guttural bellowing of goregrind to create a tapestry of vocal styles that keep this very firmly on the edge of pandemonium. There's some crusty battering on 'Napalm Shower' akin to Extreme Noise Terror or Disgust (UK). 'Chunder Blunder' has a funny sample start and is over after about 20 seconds of bedlam as each tune is focused for maximum ear hole carnage. Personal favourites include the bass line intro tunes such as 'Maximum Titty' and 'Whammy Barred Up' as the latter builds more like a death metal tune before unfurling a disembowelling sucker punch. The sample that starts 'Firecracker Up Ya Clacker' is very funny as the tune blasts in with gurgling goregrind vocals and a frenetic bombardment. The Napalm Death cover, 'Prisoner Without Walls' does its job and follows the original more or less note for note. 'Schoolgirl Shish Kebab' is diabolically disgusting vocally, bordering the animalistic style of Last Days Of Humanity or Regurgitation. The same applies to the Libido Airbag cover of 'Clit Cannibal' equally as repulsive as the original though I think I prefer the cover version than the original, probably due to sound quality.
If you feel that your ever expanding collection of grindcore is devoid of yet more ear smashing lunacy then SFHS could be just the ticket to your own self deprecating evisceration.
