Sutekh Hexen – Larvae

‘Larvae’ is the second full length effort from Atmospheric Black/ Raw Noise band Sutekh Hexen. The music here is not beautiful, but rather ugly and terrifying, recapturing that raw, evil primal power that made Black Metal such an anomaly when it began in the late 80s and early 90s. Despite there only being three tracks, the music is epic, but not for the faint of heart (or average Metal fan). Like most Noisecore/ Drone/ Black Atmospheric albums, the music is highly littered in distortion and ambient effects rather than opposed to just direct riffs and vocal assaults with keyboards in the background or moments of avant-garde technicality to ‘soften up the mood.’ While there is some moments of softness such as the keyboards of “Isvar Savasnsa” and “Let There Be Light,” this is the kind of softness one might hear in a horror or terrifying move right before a grisly kill. It is unnerving and disturbing, though at the same time oddly pleasant to hear. On the other half the noisier part of the music is wild, raging distorted guitar with the speed and energy of Black Metal along with highly distorted howling vocals, which may turn off a lot of listeners, but it only adds to the chaotic madness of the atmosphere that Sutekh try to create. “Lead Us Into Warfare” is a perfect example of this, but a track like this also sadly lacks the quieter elements to balance things out, making the music sound more like nails sliding on a chalkboard unless one really wants to endure the torture of the hypnotic, yet crushing distortion mixed with the vocals. Overall, listeners are left with a disturbing feeling probably not felt since hearing Leviathan’s ‘Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide,’ but the dark pleasure that comes with hearing something like this is well worth the effort if one is onto the perverse side of Atmospheric Black Metal and doesn’t mind coming out with a few emotional scars at how twisted things can get.
