T.A.N.K - Spasms Of Upheaval
'Spasms of Upheaval' is an impressive release. It took a little while to get used to the eclectic varitation of songs on this CD. Once they sunk in and I could feel the emotion of the music, it was awesome.
T.A.N.K (Think of A New Kind) isn't a new kind of heavy metal band, but they pull off the polars of singing and screaming vocals well. Extreme vocal variations are challenging. Sometimes the variations are so exaggerated, they come off like a battle of fire and rain.
If instrumentals is your thing, 'Life Epitaph' is probably not ideal. It is only a 1:48 in length but the haunting way one guitar note is played for the first minute works. This goes into 'The Raven's Cry' which is probably the best song on the release. Coming in at Tracks 3 and 4 seems to do this duet some injustice as these two have a finale type feel to them.
'Through the Disgrace' has superior drums and some serious death metal vocals which was a lot of fun to hear. Yep. Fun death metal vocals... go figure.
'Conflict' jumps right in. Hard and heavy with angry vocals and instruments, it is a prequel of what is to come. I also noticed a lot of cymbal hitting in this song, which I enjoyed.
'Stillness Withered' is a song that starts out with an exciting fade-in. I mean, what's next? Will there be screaming, more insane drums and how many change-ups will be in this song, were all thoughts that went through my brain which was already fried by the previous eight tracks.
'Daze' starts out like a muffled recording in a room down the hall. When you get down that hall and open the door, the song is angry, then sullen and then accepting of whatever is going on in that room.
In summary, if you like diverse music with a little hauntiness, killer drums and mixed vocals, pick up 'Spasms of Upheaval.'
