Tardive Dyskinesia - The Sea Of See Through Skins
Tardive Dyskinesia has been through tons of evolution to get where they are today, but it has all been for the better. Orignally known as Ovrride, the band formed in 2001 with the intent of covering bands like Sepultura and Metallica. Eventually they devloped their own songs and released several demos in the vein of death/ thrash metal. After several years of trying solidify a lineup and numerous influences from fellow bands they toured with, Override changed their name to Tardive Dyskinesia. In shedding their name they also shed the old musical formula and become more a technical, mathcore death metal band, but traces of their old sound can still be heard. After a successful debut in 2006, the band quickly began conocting up new tracks. In 2007 they obtained their own studio really have the peace and power to hone their musical abilities, and finally The Sea Of See Through Skins sees the light of day in 2009.
Wonder why the track is such a tongue twister? It's like the band's music. Taking the elements of the Red Chord and Meshuggah, Tardive Dyskinesia are a force to be reckoned with. Tracks like "Triggering The Fear Reactor" are buzzing with intensity and feature plenty of technical breakdowns, but also progressive notes and interludes that make things more than just a chugging, death metal mess. There's a whole new layer of depth for the band tha they could not have achieve as Override with this album. "Downfall" is more of a straightforward technical death metal track, with plenty of guitar work that sounds like Meshuggah. Even the vocals- a throaty, barking scream- sounds a bit like their vocalist. However, unlike Meshuggah, Tardive Dyskinesia try not to give their listeners a headache and feature plenty of downtime moments that focus more on melody and ease than blinding speed and skill. "Reverse Arms" is one of those tracks because it is much more digestible, but at the same time not as impressive compared to their other songs. The formula is a heavy chugging with screamed vocals, but more groove is also injected into the music, so the melody makes a good balance.
Other tracks are just straight up, hard hitting death metal. "Ask E Sea" steamrolls down the line as an instrumental with dual guitar hammer pulls and distorted melodies all over the place. "Downfall" is murderously vengeful as the vocals just rip the ears apart and the guitars switch between bursting chords to more complex melodies and invoke some catchy riffs. The drums are lost in the mix during the more extreme parts in not only this track, but mostly all the others. However, during the more melodic parts, they really shine through and give off plenty of energy to keep the vibe going.
Whatever piece of fate caused Tardive Dyskinesia to change and become what they are today obviously had a plan in mind. Their music is beautifully technical and also downright brutal. Fans of The Faceless, Born Of Osiris, and Alesania will find this appeasing. Hopefully the band will keep their niche and continue experimenting with their progressive side, blowing minds album after album.
