Terrorblade - Of Malice And Evil
This is the debut full album release by German death/thrashers Terrorblade who have released a couple of EP’s and demo’s in their relatively long lifespan since forming in 2004. There are going to be obvious comparisons by nature of their harsh sound to a couple of the Teutonic foursome of German thrashers, but there is more than this alone through the tales ‘Of Malice and Evil’. For starters, ‘Evil and Malice’ whilst being harsh, it is powerful and modern with a well-oiled rhythm section spouting some pretty spot on thrash metal. It’s not all about speed here; there is a touch of groove, a little touch of riff frenzy and some vocals that actually sound more like an American band. Tight staccato music is ignited by Terrorblade’s undoubted fire and you can find influence of Jeff Waters work, with the remainder of the music having a powerful UK and US thrash style mix, plus added European bite. Such accolades can be found on ‘Gates of Hell’, that is a perfect mix of all styles.
‘Time to Die’ and ‘Raw War Madness’ are slightly more chaotic and sounds more like their countrymen but still possesses a key element of melody taken from the US scene. It is nice to hear a thrash band not try to sound like their peers; they sound individual and take from influences a little bit of everything. In some quarters the vocals sound a little inconsistent, going between shout styled to thrash with melody, but that’s being really picky. Taking the bull by the horns and being different from the recent round of bands that burnt out by being unrealistic or non-original, thrash like this should be enjoyed, embraced and revered like the closing track ‘World is Broken’.
