The Damnation - Evilution

The Damnation was founded sometime in 1996 to spread the musical vision of a few guys from Lower Saxony, Germany. The first official release was a self-produced demo entitled “Heat” (1997), before the band was laid to rest. After not less than seven years of nothing, another demo called “Into The Underworld” was unleashed upon mankind in 2004. After a three track promotional output in 2005 and the first self-financed full length album “Into The Pits Of Hell”, the band signed to Psycho Records, who are responsible for “Evilution”.

The Damnation's style can be described as a well produced meeting of Thrash and Death Metal. Obviously inspired by the 80's and 90's scene, the band recorded a bunch of songs with a nice feeling for straight-line riffs, but without sounding old-fashioned or archaic. “Evilution” offers the right stuff for fans of basic Death / Thrash Metal. You won't find “modern” additions like keyboards, female vocals or accoustic parts, which is surely an enrichment in its own manner and will turn your living room into a hell of a pit. Extensive double bass drum parts, down tuned string abusing and dark, but intelligible growling are the foundation for this snapshot of the northern German scene. The majority of the songs are mid-tempo based, but there are also faster parts every now and then. Unfortunately “Evilution” gets a little bit predictable after the first half and big surprises are in short supply. The tracks are of course well executed and also thought-out, but some more diversifications would have been a better choice to leave a bigger lasting impact. The guys of The Damnation are on the right way and there's no doubt about their skills. Occasionally some riffs remind me of Exodus, others of Annihilator or Possessed. The target group will surely party to this, but fans of versed technical refinements might wrinkle ones nose about it. Anyway, the result is interesting, but predictable after a while. Nevertheless “Evilution” is worth to be checked out.
