The Massacre Cave - The Ninth Wave
'The Ninth Wave' is the debut EP of relatively unknown The Massacre Cave, hailing from the small Scottish isle of Eigg. Following their homeland's influence in sound, the music on this EP is a mix of Folk tinged Death/Thrash Metal that is loud, ferocious, and also highly melodic at times. Tracks like "Winds Of Death" feature excellent solos that don't overtake the songs or interrupt the flow. "Long Time At Sea" is a little more techinical with bursts of bass, softer moments of guitars, and overall a bombastic display of sound that ebbs and flows like the ocean. The single "Behemoth" focuses more on the instrumental work with less from the vocals, even though it is one of the rare tracks to feature any death growls to really show a strong Death Metal influence within the music. The music itself is pretty basic with its catchy rhythms and riffs and doesn't quite touch on the technical beauty of a track like "Long Time At Sea," but it still holds merit. Finally there is "They Prey Approaches" which switches between sharp Rock influenced riffs and jarring guitar passages that make it feel almost like there is a Mastodon influence here, especially with the sharp, barking vocals that seem like they are telling a story as opposed to growling and snarling non-sensically. Overall, this EP is a bit brief, but gives listeners a taste of what The Massacre Cave has to offer with raw precision and power, as well as a few technical moments that will overwhelm more listeners than the sea itself.
