The Rotted - Anarchogram
Under the name of Gorerotted, The Rotted, had 3 full length albums of brutal blasting death grind with abit of tongue in cheek humour (put your bits in a concrete mix?!). Since then they have gone all serious dropped the "Gore" in the name (They were affectionately known by fans as "The Rotted") and embraced abit of crust punk sound featuring quite abit of the much associated "d-beat".
Under this guise, The Rotted have released one album, "Get Dead Or Die Trying" which to be fair was met with mixed emotions, gone was the humour that they were once known for and to this reviewer i have to admit i missed it so. So here we are presented
with "Anarchogram" which is a stop gap release featuring 2 brand spankin` new songs and 4 covers! The new tracks, "Drink Myself To Death" and "Dawn Of A New Error" are both strong tracks but i know this is to regarded as a totally different entity but i find it hard to get past this fact. That saying they are both catchy as fuck though unashamedly punk as fuck!!! Im thinking Disfear here but maybe im wrong? Its worth mentioning that the drumming on offer is absolutely superb, its like a bloody whirlwind. I have to say i do really like the middle breakdown in "Drink Myself To Death" and im sure it will be met with consequent fist banging from the moshpits worldwide. "Dawn Of A New Error" has a punk feel also but has almost a vague reminiscent of the "Gore"ROTTED we all know and love.
So hopefully this a good thing and maybe with the new album, may have a knod to their old sound. This track is really chunky stomper its gotta be said with some nice pit ready breakdowns. Ben Mccrows vocals are in fine fine form as he tears his throat out through
these songs. His vocals have most definitely gone from strength to strength on every release that he has recorded.
And so onto the covers! Which are Motorhead`s Iron fist, Sepultura`s Propangda, Mayhem`s DeathCrush and Entombed`s Out Of Hand. Whilst the covers
stay very true to form and dont really venture of the beaten track. I would kind of have liked them to put their own stamp on them but i have to admit they are cool especially the Motorhead and as im a huge Sepultura, i love the Propaganda cover.
The new tracks may recoup some of the lost fans from the name/direction change but perhaps not all of them though i do think the new album could be a stormer. However we shall have to wait and see. The covers are more than probably only for the diehard of fans of the band but hey fuck it, they sound cool and its cheap as chips for the fans so pick it up as its worth a listen!
