Transylvania Stud - The Red Queen

Transylvania Stud is, certainly, an odd band name, but, WOW, what an amazing band. Their release, “The Red Queen” is a great introduction to the band. Not perfect by any means, but judging by this release, I am sure this is a band that can get a crowd going at a live show. To be honest, this is one of those bands that I didn’t have much hope for when I first received the CD. Yes, I was skeptical to say the least. However, with one spin of this disc, I was hooked.

The riffs are groove-laden with a nice bite, and are also tuned down a bit, yet not to an insane degree. Almost like a mixture of Black Sabbath and Black Label Society with a slight vibe of Alice in Chains. Well put together and played with a passionate ferocity. The style of drums is a slower classic or traditional style overlaid with a slight stoner/doom vibe for a uniquely effective style of playing. The bass gives good support to the other instruments, but there are a few times where it seems drowned out. However, for the most part, the purposed is served as it was written. A nice, smooth vocal pattern is what is chosen for this groovy slab of metal. No gritty grunts here! This is one of those releases where the chosen vocal patterns seems like it was ordained by the metal gods to be meant for it. The tone and slight octave variation is perfect here.

I really enjoyed this release. Didn’t really know what to expect at first, but I was pleasantly surprised at the sound that came out of my speakers. It’s bands like Transylvania Stud that will keep this genre alive and well. Listen and I think you’ll agree that the only thing wrong here it that the release just isn’t long enough!
