True Lie – At The First Glare Of A Colder Sky
The first full length album by True Lie sees an awesome interpretation of post-thrash, metalcore and groove with a strong emphasis on melody. The band has been very busy in recent years and a lot of work was put in too this album, and I can definitely say it was a very strong effort. The album sounds very professional, like something you would hear from Trivium or Killswitch Engage, it strides from bouncy rhythms to punching melodies that have a hard hitting impact compared to the nowadays popular metalcore bands with choruses that sound like they could’ve been in a pop punk song. They have a lot of different influences as mentioned before, and they balance them out perfectly throughout the record, through a song there could be a progressive metal-esque clean guitar line followed by immense groove inducing riffs too then a spectacular melody. Too me it is like if Northlane, Trivium and Machine Head had a baby that decided to play an original take on metalcore.
The band’s instrumentation is superb with production value at astounding level, guitars sounding crisp but heavy, bass thundering through, drums at a stellar but brutal level and vocals varied and precise. Another point to be made about the vocals is the singing, it isn’t your typical high-pitched unbearable singing present in A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria etc, and instead it is genuine singing that can be compared to the likes of Sanctity and other groove/thrash related bands. Musicianship is of course excellent and I praise the band for delivering this dealing of fine metalcore that needs to be more recognised! An honourable mention for this album would have to be the artwork, I found it fascinating and beautiful, the kind of artwork you can look at for ages, again coming in with the comparisons but this is done so professionally, it literally could be the cover of the latest Northlane album!
I really see great things coming for this band, their first full length album really is superb and I have nothing to criticize them for, all I can say is I hope that they keep going and make the next release even more excellent!
