Trut - Traumwerdung

Trut, a fairly new Swiss band, released its demo TRAUMWERDUNG in 2006 and it is finally making its debut on BRUTALISM.com. The effort is a real pleasure to listen to and yet there is something less than about it. Less than what you might ask? I can not really say. I think this might be one of those black metal groups that slips along a slope of styles, not unlike another smooth black metalesque band (if that is what you want to call them), Nachtmystium, from Chicagoland, USA (right close to where I live in fact). Trut includes slow ambient keyboard work in its oeuvre, fast buzzing guitars, all kinds of rhythm changes, and a drummer that hits hard (but not extraordinarily hard). It’s like when I listen to the guitars, I think mostly of Xasthur and Striborg because guitars in both Malefic’s and Sin Nanna’s projects lack that high quality metal guitar recording that we find in bands like Burzum or Satyricon. There is so much more noise in the recording, a noise that suppresses the guitars a little. That’s why I think of striborg and Xasthur.

But at the same time, the vocals also remind me of Striborg because Trut’s singer sounds like he might be singing from the dark wood somewhere in a style that reminds me much of Ulver’s vocals on BERGTATT. Not the rest of it really, but the vocals for sure. What is so strange about this record is that I am reminded of all these bands and still Trut sounds like none of them. I think this is because the members of Trut have found a cool niche within metal and that is that they have figured out how to use the black metal front to break musical rules and have lots of fun while creating creative and relaxing musical larceny (I stole the idea of using black metal as a tool for play from Ulver). So stealing goes on every day and even though I think I recognize some of the pieces of music stolen I think this is a fun demo from a band that just needs to keep on going. The band has a few songs available for listening on last.fm (http://www.last.fm/music/Trut) and I think all fans of innovative black metal should look for this band over the years. The e-mail is below and might be worth sending a message to ask about where to get TRAUMWERDUNG because unless you are a close minded purist, you will enjoy it.
